This unusual Baroque figure of Christ carved circa 1670 and 1700 is in a form associated with his removal from the cross after crucifixion but before his actual entombment. The body is carved still wearing the loincloth and showing the blood-stained scar to his abdomen. The figure in death is powerful and melancholy. The carving has been gessoed and polychromed which has now become chippy and faded adding to the nature of the scene depicted. The carving is well executed and the sense of drama has been heightened by the elongation of the figure and the enlargement of the hands and feet. The figure has much in common with both Spanish/ Spanish Colonial and Italian carvings of the period. However, we feel this extreme devotional object and its sense of martyrdom can only be of Spanish derivation.
