Hand-carved in three sections (the double-sided platform, the turned shaft, and the robust scrolled base), this French music lectern, or lutrin, dates to circa 1700. A combination of walnut and pine woods, the lectern has a rich dark brown patina, with some areas of a lighter honey color.
The double-sided slant-top platform rotates around the turned shaft, which slots into an open roundel stretcher that connects four scrolls which hang below the thick ledges of the dais. Both sides of the platform are pierced, with a shaped cutout set between the undulating platform edges. The base is stout, comprised of four volute feet, each topped by tightly wound scrolls (although one is missing). Our carved walnut and pine lectern would make a fascinating music sheet holder or a fine art display.
