The Minotaur (Minótauros) is a figure from Greek mythology. Son of the Bull of Crete and of Pasiphae, queen of Crete, he was a monstrous and ferocious being, with the body of a man and the head of a bull who was born at the behest of Poseidon, the god of the sea, who intended to punish the king of Crete, Minos. Athens, defeated by Minos, was forced to pay a horrible tribute by offering him seven boys and seven girls every year. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
