The main body, which is adorned with several layers of thin molding, is significantly narrower than the lid and the apron. However, the rectilinear shape associated with Italian Late Renaissance furniture remains prevalent. This form is softened by a pair of C-scrolls that embellish the high-profile apron that also has several (yet thicker) layers of molding. The lid also has a subtle bevel on the underside, above the repeating niche carvings that is featured on all sides but the back. A pair of internal iron hinges allow the lid to open, revealing an interior compartment capable of storing smaller items. Our Italian walnut cassone can be utilized as a small chest in a dining room, living room, bathroom, or hallway.
